Is An Octopus(Alternet Second Stage) Required for Scuba Diving

by Gerry Polo
(Chicago IL)

I am a returning diver after logging in approx. 40 dives.
I want to buy new equipment.
I an octopus really required on dives?
Thanks.

Answer:

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for your question.

As certified divers, we are not required to carry an octopus (alternate second stage). As a scuba instructor, my opinion is we have a responsiblity to our dive buddy to have an alternet air source in the event they find themselves in a low on air/out of air situation. I know I like to see my dive buddy with an octopus. Using an octopus is so much better than buddy breathing.

Students in any type of scuba diving class are required to have an octopus second stage. Most all the rental dive gear you see will have an octopus second stage. Dive shop owners will normally make them a required piece of dive equipment for their divemasters and instructors. This shows us just how important they are.

As a certified scuba diver, having an octopus (alternate second stage) for another diver who is low on air/out of air in the responible thing to do.

I hope this answers you questions.

Cheers,
Jim
