Scuba Diving Job OpportunitiesCreate Your Own Dive Jobs
What kinds of scuba diving job opportunities are available for certified divers that are not divemasters or dive instructors? For divers who are willing to be a bit creative, there can be several ways to make money in the water. Some of the best scuba dive opportunities are the ones we create ourselves. Many divers have ended up with a very lucrative dive business simply by looking around and recognizing different dive job opportunities. They create their own dive jobs by satisfying a need for certain marine services. These are not the most common or well known types of jobs, but they can be an excellent way to get paid for diving. Some of the best dive job opportunities can be found in tropical resort areas like the Caribbean, Australia, Mexico and Hawaii. In these locations, year-round vacancies for divers can usually be found. Much of this work is around the marinas and boating communities. The island of St. Maarten is a good example. The island is a popular tropical vacation destination and provides a great number of Caribbean dive job opportunities. Many visitors to the island come for some type of boating activity, so there are several big marinas. There is also a large protected lagoon that provides a great anchorage for boats. The island host several sailing regattas through out the year and ferries running back and forth to three other islands. There are boats moving around the island year round. Resort areas like St. Maarten are prime hunting grounds if you are looking for dive jobs. Many of these potential dive job opportunities can be preformed by divers who have open water or advanced open water certification, a little mechanical ability and the desire to work in the water. Bottom CleaningYou can find boat bottoms to be cleaned in any boating community. Some boat owners will clean their own boats, but there are many that would prefer to leave this job to someone else. There are no special skills required for this kind of dive job. A diver scrapes the barnacles and crud from the boat bottom, propeller shafts and propeller blades. All through hull fittings are checked and cleaned. This is not a very glamorous dive job and can be pretty nasty at times. But it presents an opportunity to earn some descent money working in the water. Just how much money you can earn will depend on the area you are working in and what people are willing to pay. Underwater Repair WorkScuba diving job opportunities doing underwater repair work can be found around most boating communities (marinas and boat anchorages). This type of underwater work can require a basic mechanical knowledge. Underwater work can consist of...
Underwater repair work offers some really good scuba diving job opportunities. In the right area, it can lead to year-round scuba employment. Underwater Search and RecoveryIn any big vacation destination where there are lots of boating activities, things will fall off boats into the sea. Most of the time these are items of value and people want them recovered. Divers have been called in to search and recover everything from lost anchors and out board motors to Rolex’s and diamond rings. Good underwater navigation skills and recovery techniques are needed for this type of dive job. Many times underwater searches are conducted in bad visibility, in swift currents and/or silty bottoms. The better your underwater skills are the better chance you have of recovering that valuable lost item. Working as a Free Lance DiverCreating your own scuba diving job opportunities normally means you end up working for yourself (free lance). There is no shop to report to and no boss screaming at you all day. You negotiate the work to be done and the price with the customer. You cut out the middle man and this enables you to but more money in your pocket. There are many scuba diving job opportunities available to divers with just an open water certification. But it is highly recommended you have at least a rescue diver certification before you attempt any work underwater. This will give you the skills to handle most problems that might occur while working underwater. Some dive jobs are a bit off the beaten path and are not what comes to mind when you think about a scuba profession. They are, however a great way to earn money working in the water. These lesser known scuba jobs may be the opportunity you need to turn your love of scuba diving into a profession.
