Scuba Masks and Swim Fins

Scuba Masks and Swim Fins

Two of the most important pieces of basic dive gear are scuba masks and swim fins. A diver's level of comfort depends on a mask and fins that fits right.

Fish are equipped with eyes that can focus underwater and fins to give them movement. Scuba masks give divers clear vision and swim fins give them movement while diving. A scuba mask creates a pocket of air in front of the eyes which enables them to focus. Fins provide the propulsion underwater.

An American, Guy Gilpatric, created the first modern scuba mask in the 1930's. The French inventor, Louis Corlieu, patented the first rubber swim fins in 1933. With out these two pieces of dive gear, seeing and moving underwater is pretty much impossible.
